Celebrating a client’s success

The Door of Hope in Meadow Lake is changing lives. Just ask Abraham Sylvestre who, thanks to the support provided by the Door of Hope along with his friends, family and others, recently marked one year of sobriety. To celebrate this achievement, a party was held in Sylvestre’s honour at the Door of Hope Friday morning (Nov. 1).

“Today is a wonderful day,” remarked Door of Hope executive director Delton Sylvain. “We are so happy to be able to celebrate Abraham’s one year of sobriety. Abraham, you are such an incredible example to all of us.” Sylvain went on to describe the moment, stating it isn’t just about Sylvestre’s journey. “It’s a powerful reminder of the hope and the strength that exist in all of us,” he said. “Abraham’s path hasn’t been easy at all… There are so many triggers, there are so many downs, but you (Sylvestre) stand here today as a shining example of what is possible when you choose to fight for yourself. Your courage inspires all of us to believe recovery is not only achievable but can lead to a brighter future filled with joy and purpose.”

Sylvain said it fills his heart with happiness when he sees Sylvestre at the Door of Hope with his grandchildren. “You are an amazing and wonderful man,” he noted. “For those who are still struggling, whether it’s with drug addiction or alcoholism, I want you to know this. Every small step you take is a victory worth celebrating. Your battles are varied and your journeys are unique, so surround yourself with support, lean on one another and never forget the strength you have within you. Remember there is always hope. We are here for you at all times and we love you always. And, tomorrow, there is always an opportunity to make a change.” Sylvestre, upon accepting the certificate presented to him that day by the Door of Hope, expressed gratitude to everyone who has supported him.

“I have a great partner who helps me out… If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be here,” Sylvestre said. “The same goes for my family and for my friends here… You’re wonderful people. Everybody needs help. And, if you think people don’t care, it’s not true. There are people out there who care.” Also in attendance for Friday’s gathering was Krista Montgomery, a manager and cook at the Door of Hope. “Abraham, I’ve watched you every step of your journey and I have had the pleasure of cheering you on – I am so proud of you,” she said. “I knew you could do it. I never doubted you for a second.”

In addition to a certificate of achievement, Sylvestre was also presented with a key chain and a one-year chip. “This isn’t an occasion we get to celebrate every day,” Montgomery added. “This is something pretty special. You guys know how much I love you and I know how much this means to you. We’re going to have more celebrations like this. This is only the first.”

Sylvain also expressed his thanks to everyone who has supported and continues to support the Door of Hope. “Thank you to the donors, the volunteers and to the people who are always praying for this place,” he said. “Your generosity and kindness create a lifeline for many, and your belief in our mission makes a profound difference. This isn’t just about feeding people. It’s about fostering a place so our people on the streets have a family. We love you when you’re high, we love you when you’re sober. We love you when you’re low, we love you any time. The Door of Hope and God always love you. Abraham, thank you for showing everyone this is possible. Thank you for being a leader to your grandchildren, thank you for being a leader to your children and thank you so much for being a leader for all the witnesses you have around you.”
